Bogotá was founded in 1538 by Spanish explorer Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. It became the capital of Colombia in 1819, when it was part of Gran Columbia. After Gran Columbia broke up, Bogotá remained the capital of Colombia.

The city is home to many government buildings and offices, as well as universities and museums. The climate in Bogotá is cool and mild all year round.

On August 7, 1858, the Congress of New Granada decreed that pesos moneda corriente would be replaced by a new currency system consisting of 10 decimal places (equivalent to today’s centavos), with 8 reales = 1 peso moneda fuerte (“strong coin”). In 1871, Colombia went on the gold standard, pegging its currency to British pound sterling at a rate of 1 GBP = 4 COP (2 shillings and 6 pence per ounce). This lasted until 1925 when Great Britain abandoned the gold standard and pegged its currency instead to the US dollar at a rate of £1 = $4.862 (where £1 was equal to one pound sterling and $4.862 was equivalent to one US dollar).

As a result, Colombia followed suit and pegged its currency to the US dollar at a rate of 1 COP = $0.056143 (5 cents per COP). This peg lasted until 1931 when it was abandoned during the Great Depression as part of President Enrique Olaya Herrera’s monetary reforms which saw inflation rise sharply and economic output contract significantly.[11] A new peg of 2250 COP = 1 USD was then established.[12][13]

This second peg only lasted until 1960 when it was again abandoned during another period of high inflation.[14] Since that time, no formal peg has been in place although informally the Colombian peso has been following trends set by other currencies such as the US dollar or euro.[15][16]

Today, Colombian banks issue two types of notes – regular notes and special notes.
