John Catesby Harington was born in 1561 in England. His father, Sir James Harington, was a courtier to Queen Elizabeth I and his mother, Isabella Markham, was the daughter of a wealthy landowner. When Harington was four years old, his father died and he inherited his estate.
He was educated at Eton College and then at King’s College, Cambridge. In 1584, he married Anne Stanley, the daughter of Sir Edward Stanley. They had two children: James (born 1585) and Isabella (born 1586).

During the course of his life, Harington held various positions within the Virginia colony including Burgess for Warwick County (1652-54) and High Sheriff of Warwick County (1655).
He also served as a captain during Bacon’s Rebellion in 1676.
Harington died on March 28th, 1680 at the age of seventy three. He is buried at St Luke’s Churchyard in Hampton, Virginia.
